Liquitex demo

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

Recently I had the opportunity to attend a demonstration/lecture of Liquitex acrylic products. Topics covered included paints, mixing, mediums, gels and varnishes. While the lecturer demonstrated the products in action, samples artwork made with different mediums were passed around the room so we could see upclose the finished results. I came away with more knowledge of their paint mediums and a very generous gift pack: brochures, full colour catalog, a 100+ page comprehensive guide to acrylics and a few samples in retail size bottles (wheee!). The print material are also available on Liquitex‘s website in PDF format.

Some notes…in case anyone else finds this useful.. ;)

Illuminated

Yesh, I got a new lamp! No more being dependent on daylight! WHEEEEEEEE. I had been considering buying a daylight lamp this time last year but was hesitant to drop $100+ on one. But lately, I’ve been having some trouble seeing in low lighting so that spurred me to finally get one. =_=;; Guess there are some things you can’t scrimp on…

My first choice was the compact model. Bought one home to try…I had to place it quite close to me (about a foot away) to be within the maximum level of brightness. I also feared I would accidently headbutt the thing and send it knocking over my paint bottles and water. So I exchanged it for the desktop model and I LOVE it. This one can be placed at a more comfortable distance away, it lights up my entire desk, plus it can be used for photographing. :D DD Only thing I found rather useless was the magnifier it came with. Maybe I’m just not used to using one but it made me kinda dizzy after trying to paint under it for a few minutes. Furthermore, the lens was reflecting light no matter how I angled it and there is a degree of distortion. The head I was painting appeared horizontally stretched..that really threw me off! But otherwise, it’s a great lamp.

While at the art store, I noticed Liquitex acrylics had gone up in price from around $4 a bottle to nearly $7 (before taxes)! And that’s just for the series 1 colours. >_<

Downsizing

Yay~~ I knocked a few things off my wishlist (for different reasons). :P Last weekend my bro and I went to check out the daylight lamp at the store. He was hoping it could be used as lighting for photography, and for me, to be able to use it to paint at night. But as we found out, the light bulb had too much of a cool tone, which made our hands looked even more red under the bulb. Bro also had a camera with him and snapped a couple of shots with the white balance on daylight setting. In the pics, the lamp looked like it was giving off a green light. Didn’t have time to test on auto white balance…store employees are rather touchy about people taking photos inside the shop (which is understandable..but when you keep getting dirty looks just cuz you got a camera hanging around your neck..^^;;). So I dunno, maybe I’ll just look for a regular desktop flourescent lamp at Home Depot or something..:P

Also saw the airbrush unit and the multitude of accessories…it looks overwhelming. ^^;; Hehe, think I’ll just stay low-tech for now.

I scored a copy of the Reader’s Digest sewing book for $20 at the Book Warehouse. Whoohoo! That’s half of what Amazon.ca is selling it for. Now if I can only put it to a good use. :3 I really do like making outfits and stuff but sometimes just need a big dose of motivation. Anyway, my aunt had offered me the use of her Juki. It’s soooo quiet and smooth, unlike our machine…wheee..ok that should be enough motivation but sewing in a garage in winter time is not. :P Well, we shall see..!
