FriDoll Five #15: Stand(s) in the Place where you Live

Friday, August 20th, 2004

For once I’m actually answering this on a Friday..^^;; (Questions courtesy of Emi!)

1. Do you have any doll stands?
Yep. Most are the Takara thigh clamp type. I have a one or two of the waist clamp, Takara lower leg hold and a MAD (Mad About Dolls) stand.

2. For those of you who have doll stands: What kind of stands do you like best? (metal, wooden, telescoping/adjustable, saddle, waist-clamp)
I like the thigh clamp ones because they can be used for most of my 1/6th dolls and the design is not very obtrusive, which is great for photos! The only downside is that being plastic, they can break easily if used a lot. I can see some stress marks on the clamp itself in a few stands. ¬_¬

3. For people who display their dolls on shelves, etc: Do you put them in poses? Use stands? Have them standing or sitting?
The ones standing all have stands and some are sitting. I pose them if I feel like it.

For people who store their dolls: Do you store them sitting, standing, lying down? Do you do anything special to protect their hair or face?
I store them lying down, usually tossed into a box or desk drawer. ^^;; But these are the ones I don’t really care for and may be repainted so…

4. Have you ever customized or tweaked a doll to increase poseability?
Not really, aside from transferring heads to a more poseable body.

5. Do you prefer dolls that can stand on their own, or does it not matter?
It would be cool if dolls could be self-standing (and self-supporting in other ways ^_~) and have good degree of stability.

FriDoll Five #14: What’s in a name?

Courtesy of Emi. ^^

1. Those of you with ball-joint dolls… do you have a preferred term for this type of doll? e.g. Super Dollfie, BJD, resin ball-joint doll, asian ball-joint doll, 40 cm/60 cm doll, giant-size doll thing, etc.
BJD.

Those of you with 1/6 scale dolls: do you have a term you prefer or tend to use, such as “action doll”, “poseable doll”, “fashion doll”, “dollies”, “dollfies”, “Barbies”, etc?
Just dolls.

2. Do you have profiles and personalities for your dolls? If so, do they include age, astrological sign, etc?
Some of them are based on original characters so they already have a personality/background formed. I keep a profile of every doll to help remember what materials were used, when they were created, etc.. When I make plans for a doll, the age (or age group) is usually one of the first things to be decided upon.

3. Have you ever re-named a doll? (This includes changing its name from the default one, or changing a doll’s name after you named it already.) If so, what were some reasons you had for changing the name?
Yes, either to make them a little more unique (for the commercially released dolls) or because the initial or temporary name was no longer suitable.

4. What term do you use when talking about or thinking of your dolls? Do you call them or think of them as:
* your dolls
* your daughter/son/children
* your kids
* visitors from another dimension
* or something else entirely?

Just “my dolls”. Personally I feel weird calling them “my kids/daughter/son/etc.” and on the same line, being referred to as their “mom”.

5. For those of you who make doll photo stories: Do you ever appear in them (off-screen or on-screen)? If so, what do your dolls call you?
Not yet(?). They’d probably just call me by my name.

For those who don’t make doll photo stories: What do you think of yourself as? Your doll’s owner? Mom? Auntie/Uncle? Roommate?
The owner or the “omnipresent being that controls their puny lives”.

FriDoll Five #12: Does Size Matter?

Saturday, July 17th, 2004

(from Twotone)

1. Do you have a favorite doll size or body type? (e.g. American Girl, SD, SD13, MSD, Barbie, Blythe, Pullip, Licca) What do you like about it?
1/6th size because they don’t take up too much room. Favourite body type would be probably be pale Go Guy (aside from the deformed feet). So sad I have only one. :(

2. Do you prefer your dolls to be roughly the same size and body shape, or do you prefer different heights, shapes, etc? Why or why not?
The more variety the better! Different body types can help make each doll even more unique.

3. For those with male and female dolls: Do you prefer your guys to be taller than your ladies, or does it not matter?
I don’t have a problem if a few of my male dolls are shorter that the females. However being not immune to cultural biases, I would prefer the guys to be generally taller.

4. Do you find it easier to shop for/sew for any particular doll more than others?
The 1/6th females are easier to find clothes for, while it’s a struggle for the guys. It’s also more difficult to sew fitted bodices for busty dolls (argh, princess seams *stabbitystab*). I’d imagine it would be so much easier to sew for the 16″+ dolls which is sorta why I’m itching to get one. ^^;;

5. Is there such a thing as a doll that’s *too* big or *too* small?
Anything over 2 feet tall is too big for me; I just don’t have the space for it. Nothing’s too small, unless its size puts the doll in danger of being easily lost amongst my junk.
